Main Ingredients
- 4 cups no sodium and no onion or garlic chicken bone broth
- 1 cup water (use 1/2 cup if adding canned spinach)
- 1 can pumpkin puree
- 2 cans no salt added green beans (chopped very fine for cats)
- 1 cup brown rice
- 3 cans sardines in olive oil (or no salt or oil added if available)
- 1–2 large chicken breasts (can be frozen)
- 1 cup frozen blueberries
- 2 eggs
Optional Ingredients
- 1/2 can spinach or 2 cups fresh chopped spinach
- Prepare Ingredients: Drain the green beans and chop them very fine, especially if feeding cats to ensure easy digestion and prevent choking.
- Combine Main Ingredients (Except Sardines & Chicken): In the Crock Pot, add bone broth, water, pumpkin puree, chopped green beans, brown rice, frozen blueberries, eggs, and optional spinach if using. Stir thoroughly to combine all ingredients evenly.
- Add Chicken: Place the chicken breasts into the Crock Pot, making sure they are fully submerged in the liquid to cook evenly and remain moist during the slow cooking process.
- Cook: Set the Crock Pot to low heat and cook for 5 to 6 hours until the chicken is thoroughly cooked and the flavors meld.
- Shred Chicken: Turn off the Crock Pot. Remove the chicken breasts and shred them finely with a fork or chop into small pieces, keeping in mind that cats need finer pieces than dogs.
- Mix Chicken Back In: Return the shredded chicken to the Crock Pot and stir well to evenly distribute throughout the mixture.
- Add Sardines: Drain the sardines if desired or keep the oil for extra flavor. Break sardines into small pieces and stir gently but thoroughly into the food mixture.
- Cool the Food: Let the mixture cool inside the Crock Pot for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally to help it cool faster and prevent clumping.
- Portion and Store: Spoon approximately 1 cup of the mixture into quart-sized freezer bags. Seal and flatten each bag for easy stacking and storage in the freezer.
- Serving Suggestions: Thaw frozen portions in the refrigerator for about one day before serving. Serve 2-3 tablespoons per day alongside regular pet kibble for a nutrient-rich meal enhancement.
Notes
- The recipe makes roughly 12 cups of pet food, which can be portioned into 12 one-cup servings suitable for multiple meal uses.
- If using canned spinach, reduce the water to 1/2 cup to maintain appropriate moisture balance.
- Do not add sardines during cooking to avoid overpowering the aroma in your kitchen; add them after cooking is complete.
- Shred or finely chop the chicken especially when serving cats to prevent choking and aid digestion.
- Freezer bags keep the food fresh for several months; refrigerate any thawed portions and consume within one week.
- Portion sizes and acceptance may vary by pet; some pets may refuse this food, so monitor their preferences.
- This recipe avoids common harmful ingredients such as onions and garlic, making it safer for pets.
