Ingredients

Scale

Pop Tarts

  • 2 packages refrigerated pie crust
  • 1/2 cup strawberry jam
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 2 tablespoons flour for dusting

Icing

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pink food coloring (optional)
  • Heart-shaped sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare pie crust: Let the refrigerated pie crusts sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes to soften slightly, making them easier to work with.
  3. Cut out shapes: Unroll the pie crusts onto a floured surface and use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out heart shapes from the dough.
  4. Add jam filling: Place about 1 teaspoon of strawberry jam in the center of half of the heart shapes, being careful to keep the jam away from the edges to prevent leaking.
  5. Seal pop tarts: Top the jam-filled hearts with the remaining heart shapes and firmly seal the edges together by pressing with the tines of a fork.
  6. Vent the tops: Poke 3 small holes in the top of each pop tart to allow steam to escape during baking.
  7. Egg wash and bake: Brush the tops of the pop tarts with the beaten egg to give them a glossy finish and bake them in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Cool completely: Remove the pop tarts from the oven and allow them to cool thoroughly on a wire rack before adding icing.
  9. Make the icing: In a small bowl, mix together powdered sugar, milk, vanilla extract, and optional pink food coloring until smooth and drizzly.
  10. Decorate: Drizzle the icing over the cooled pop tarts and immediately add heart-shaped sprinkles while the icing is still wet to ensure they stick.

Notes

  • Letting the dough sit at room temperature prevents cracking when cutting and folding.
  • Keep the jam filling away from the edges to avoid leakage during baking.
  • You can substitute strawberry jam with your favorite fruit preserves.
  • Use a light hand with the icing to prevent it from becoming too runny.
  • Store pop tarts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
