Jam Base
- 3 lbs oranges, peeled, roughly 5 cups puree
- 1 cup sugar
Optional Spices
- 1–2 cinnamon sticks
- 1–2 star anise
- 1–2 cloves
- Peel Oranges: Peel the oranges carefully, removing as much of the white pith as possible to avoid bitterness in the jam.
- Puree Oranges: Use an immersion blender or a regular blender to puree the peeled oranges into a smooth consistency suitable for jam-making.
- Combine Ingredients: Pour the orange puree into a saucepan and add sugar along with the optional cinnamon sticks, star anise, and cloves for added warmth and flavor.
- Simmer Jam: Heat the mixture over moderate heat, allowing it to gently simmer and thicken. This process typically takes between 20 to 30 minutes. Periodically test the jam’s consistency by placing a spoonful on a chilled plate kept in the freezer.
- Jar and Store: Once thickened to your liking, pour the hot jam into prepared canning jars. Store the jars in the refrigerator for immediate use or process in a water bath canner for 10 minutes to preserve the jam for longer storage.
Notes
- Removing the white pith from oranges reduces bitterness in the jam.
- Testing jam consistency on a cold plate prevents overcooking.
- Water bath canning ensures safe preservation for shelf storage.
- Optional spices can be adjusted or omitted according to taste preference.
- Use sterilized jars and lids to maintain jam quality and safety.
