For the Chicken:
- 1 lb skinless boneless chicken thighs
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 cup cornstarch (or potato starch for coating chicken)
- 1/3 cup vegetable oil (or any neutral oil)
For the Sauce:
- 1/2 green onion (finely chopped)
- ½ cup honey (plain liquid kind)
- 2.5 tbsp regular soy sauce
- 2 tbsp sesame oil
- 1/2 tbsp white granulated sugar (or cane sugar)
- 1 tbsp sesame seeds
- 1 tbsp cornstarch (or potato starch)
- 3 garlic cloves (minced)
- 2 tsp Shaoxing Cooking Wine (or dry sherry wine, dry white wine or chicken broth for non-alcoholic version)
- 2 tsp rice vinegar (or apple cider/white vinegar)
- ¾ cup water (room temperature)
- Mix Sauce: In a small bowl, combine the sauce ingredients. Set aside.
- Prepare Chicken: Dice chicken thighs and season with salt. Coat with cornstarch.
- Fry Chicken: Fry coated chicken until golden brown and crispy.
- Make Sauce: Simmer the sauce until thickened.
- Coat Chicken: Toss fried chicken in the sauce until coated. Garnish with green onions.
Notes
- You can adjust the sweetness of the sauce by adding more or less honey.
- For a spicier kick, add some red pepper flakes or Sriracha.
- Serve over steamed rice or with a side of veggies for a complete meal.
