For the Chicken:

  • 1 lb skinless boneless chicken thighs
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch (or potato starch for coating chicken)
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil (or any neutral oil)

For the Sauce:

  • 1/2 green onion (finely chopped)
  • ½ cup honey (plain liquid kind)
  • 2.5 tbsp regular soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1/2 tbsp white granulated sugar (or cane sugar)
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch (or potato starch)
  • 3 garlic cloves (minced)
  • 2 tsp Shaoxing Cooking Wine (or dry sherry wine, dry white wine or chicken broth for non-alcoholic version)
  • 2 tsp rice vinegar (or apple cider/white vinegar)
  • ¾ cup water (room temperature)

Instructions

  1. Mix Sauce: In a small bowl, combine the sauce ingredients. Set aside.
  2. Prepare Chicken: Dice chicken thighs and season with salt. Coat with cornstarch.
  3. Fry Chicken: Fry coated chicken until golden brown and crispy.
  4. Make Sauce: Simmer the sauce until thickened.
  5. Coat Chicken: Toss fried chicken in the sauce until coated. Garnish with green onions.

Notes

  • You can adjust the sweetness of the sauce by adding more or less honey.
  • For a spicier kick, add some red pepper flakes or Sriracha.
  • Serve over steamed rice or with a side of veggies for a complete meal.
