Ingredients

Scale

Base

  • 1 sleeve Saltine crackers (about 40 crackers)

Toffee Mixture

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks) (Use quality butter for best flavor.)
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar

Topping

  • 2 cups chocolate chips (semi-sweet or milk chocolate) (Choose your preferred type of chocolate.)
  • 1 cup chopped nuts (optional) (Recommended for added crunch.)

Instructions

  1. Preparation: Preheat your oven to 400°F (204°C). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper to ensure easy clean-up afterwards.
  2. Arrange Crackers: Lay the Saltine crackers in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet, covering the entire surface evenly without overlapping.
  3. Make Toffee Mixture: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter and brown sugar together. Stir continuously until the mixture comes to a gentle boil.
  4. Boil Toffee: Allow the mixture to boil without stirring for about 3 minutes until it thickens slightly and becomes syrupy.
  5. Pour Toffee Over Crackers: Remove the saucepan from heat. Carefully pour the hot toffee evenly over the layer of Saltine crackers, ensuring all crackers are coated.
  6. Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 5 to 7 minutes or until the toffee is bubbly and has set.
  7. Add Chocolate: Remove the baking sheet from the oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee. Let them sit for a couple of minutes to soften.
  8. Spread Chocolate: Use a spatula to spread the melted chocolate evenly over the toffee layer.
  9. Add Nuts (Optional): Sprinkle chopped nuts over the melted chocolate and press them gently to embed into the chocolate while it is still soft.
  10. Cool and Serve: Allow the toffee to cool completely at room temperature until fully hardened. Once cooled, break into pieces and serve.

Notes

  • Use quality unsalted butter for the best flavor and texture in the toffee.
  • You can choose either semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips depending on your preference for sweetness.
  • Chopped nuts are optional but highly recommended for added crunch and flavor.
  • Make sure to line your baking sheet with foil or parchment paper for easy removal and cleanup.
  • Store leftover toffee in an airtight container at room temperature to keep it fresh.
  • Be cautious when pouring the hot toffee mixture as it is very hot and can cause burns.
