Turkey Wings
- 4 large turkey wings, separated at the joints
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Vegetables & Aromatics
- 1 onion, thinly sliced
- 1 red bell pepper, sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, sliced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
Sauce & Seasonings
- 2 cups chicken broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (for thickening)
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the turkey wings later in the process.
- Season Wings: In a bowl, season the turkey wings evenly with smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, dried thyme, salt, and black pepper, ensuring full coverage for maximum flavor.
- Sear Turkey Wings: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, sear the turkey wings on all sides until they develop a golden brown crust. After searing, transfer the wings to a large baking dish.
- Sauté Vegetables: Using the same skillet, add the sliced onion, red and green bell peppers, and minced garlic. Sauté the vegetables until they are softened and fragrant, which will take about 5 minutes.
- Make Gravy: Sprinkle the all-purpose flour into the skillet with the softened vegetables and cook for 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste. Slowly whisk in the chicken broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring constantly to form a smooth, thick gravy.
- Combine & Cover: Pour the prepared vegetable gravy over the turkey wings in the baking dish, making sure the wings are well coated with the sauce. Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil.
- Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 2 to 2 1/2 hours, or until the turkey wings are fall-off-the-bone tender and fully cooked.
- Finish Browning: For extra color and flavor, remove the foil during the last 20 minutes of baking to allow the wings to brown on top.
- Serve: Serve the smothered turkey wings hot, spooning additional gravy and sautéed vegetables over the meat for a delicious and comforting meal.
Notes
- For a thicker gravy, you can increase the flour to 3 tablespoons or cook it slightly longer to reduce.
- Use homemade or low-sodium chicken broth for a healthier option and better control of salt content.
- If desired, add a splash of hot sauce to the gravy for a spicy kick.
- Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- To reheat, warm gently on the stovetop or in the oven, adding a bit of extra broth to loosen the gravy.
